Chinese Pictophonetic Characters(1)| 形声字 1

Around 70% of Chinese characters are pictophonetic ones, which are composed of two components, one indicating meaning and the other sound.

The pictophonetic characters of a left-right structure fall into two types. One has the semantic component on the left and the phonetic component on the right. For example:

汉字(character)    发音(Pronounciation)        声旁(Phonetic Component)       形旁(Semantic Component)

妈                                 mā                                               马 mǎ                                                女

The other has the semanitic component on the right and phonetic component on the left. For  example:

汉字(character)    发音(Pronounciation)        声旁(Phonetic Component)       形旁(Semantic Component)
