Alibaba to set up cloud data center in Dubai

The cloud computing unit of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding said it would establish a base in Dubai to seek business from companies and governments in the Middle East and North Africa.

阿里巴巴旗下云计算部门–阿里云将在迪拜设基地，以便为中东和北非的企业以及政府机构提供服务。

The deal may bolster Dubai's efforts to develop as a technology centre for the region, in addition to marking an expansion of Alibaba's cloud computing effort.

这可能有助于迪拜寻求成为地区科技中心的努力，也标志着阿里云计算业务的扩张。

Alibaba's subsidiary Aliyun will set up a venture with Meraas, a holding company owned by Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum. Meraas is involved in about 12 local real estate projects as well as tourism, retail, leisure and entertainment businesses.

阿里云将与迪拜米拉斯控股集团成立一家合资公司。米拉斯旗下业务涉及12项当地房地产项目，还包括旅游、零售、休闲以及娱乐等。

The joint venture will specialise in developing applications and big data operations in areas such as payment solutions, the two companies said in a statement on Tuesday. Meraas will build a data centre in Dubai.
