How to use ‘shi he’ and ‘he shi’ in Chinese

Chinese words, Chinese grammar, learning Chinese

Mixing up the order of the two syllables in a word is something most learners do. This makes the pair 适合 (shì hé) and 合适 (hé shì) annoying, to say the least. They mean more or less the same thing, but the former is a verb, while the latter is an adjective.

大部分学习者有时会将一个词里的两个音节词序弄混,至少,"适合"与"合适"这一组合就很烦人。它们的意思差不多一样,但是前者是动词,而后者是形容词。

The Verb 适合

适合 is a verb meaning "to suit", and must take an object.

"适合"是个动词,意思是"to suit",而且必须带上宾语。

Subject + 适合 + Object

Examples

这个工作很适合我。

zhè gè gōng zuò hěn shì hé wǒ.

This job really suits me.

你的中文名字真适合你!

nǐ de zhōng wén míng zì zhēn shì hé nǐ!

Your Chinese name suits you well.

这部电影不适合儿童看。

zhè bù diàn yǐng bú shì hé ér tóng kàn.

This movie does not suit children to watch.

The Adjective 合适

合适 is an adjective meaning "suitable or appropriate", and is used in the same way as other adjectives.

"合适"是个形容词,意思是"suitable"或"appropriate",它的用法和其它形容词一样。

Subject + Adverb + 合适

Examples

iPad虽然好用,但是对我来说价格不太合适。

iPad suī rán hǎo yòng, dàn shì duì wǒ lái shuō jià gé bú tài hé shì.

Although iPads are fun to use, I think the price is not suitable.

在办公室里抽烟有点不合适吧。

zài bàn gōng shì lǐ chōu yān yǒu diǎn bú hé shì ba.

He is very suitable. He completely matches the advertised demands.
