In ancient China, people made fabrics from bast fiber plants and silkworm silks by reeling off the threads. Based on the shape of reeled silk, they created the character "糸" (mì), which was simplified into " 纟" (sī) afterwards. In modern Chinese, it is used as a radical and named "绞丝旁" (jiǎo sī pánɡ), which means "reeled silk side" literally.
在古中国，人们利用抽丝剥茧的方法将麻类植物、蚕丝制作成布料。根据抽取出来的丝线形状，古人创造了汉字 "糸（mì）"，后经简化为"纟（sī）"。在现代汉语中，它作为部首使用，读作"绞丝旁"（jiǎo sī pánɡ）。
"纟" is a radical and cannot be used as a character independently. It should be combined with a character to form a new one. The radical is always put on the left side to indicate that the new character is an action or object related to silk, thread, ropes, fiber, cloth or textiles.
For example, "丝" (sī) is made up of two "纟". The character "丝" (sī) refers to silk spun by silkworms, and all finespun and slender objects; "织" (zhī) is a left-right structured character, whose left part "纟" indicates silk and thread and whose right part "只" means "act as required", so the whole character means "weave something from silk and threads as required". "织" is a verb indicating that making things from raw materials like fiber, silk, cotton, fur and grass. These collocations are usually seen in the phrases such as 织布 (zhī bù, weave cloth), 织网 (zhī wǎnɡ, weave a net) and 织毛衣 (zhī máo yī, knit a sweater).
