Saying ‘a lot’ with ‘you de shi’ in Chinese

Chinese words, learning Chinese, Chinese grammar

In Chinese, there are "a lot" of ways to say "a lot." "有的是 (yǒu de shì)" is one of those ways. "有的是" indicates that the amount or quantity of something is very large, and it can sometimes indicate a mood of exaggeration.

在中文里,有"很多"方式可以表达"a lot","有的是"就是其中的一种,指某物的数量很大,而且有时蕴含夸张的语气。

Subject +有的是+ Noun

Examples

我家里有的是这样的铅笔。

wǒ jiā lǐ yǒu de shì zhè yàng de qiān bǐ.

There are a lot of this kind of pencil in my house.

我有的是零钱,不用去换钱了。

wǒ yǒu de shì líng qián, bú yòng qù huàn qián le.

I have a lot of spare change, you don't need to give me change.

上海有的是川菜。

shàng hǎi yǒu de shì chuān cài.

There a lot of Sichuanese food in Shanghai.

You can also put the noun at the beginning of the sentence, and put "有的是" at the end, like so:

你也可以把名词放于句子的开头,然后"有的是"放句尾,比如这样:

Noun + Subject + 有的是

Examples

这样的铅笔我家里有的是。

zhè yàng de qiān bǐ wǒ jiā lǐ yǒu de shì.

There's a lot of this kind of pen in my house.

零钱我有的是。

líng qián wǒ yǒu de shì.

I have a lot of spare change.

川菜上海有的是。

chuān cài shàng hǎi yǒu de shì.

Shanghai has a lot of Sichuanese food.

It's important to note that "有的是" can't be negated. If you want to say the negative statement, you can say "没有很多".

记住重要的一点,"有的是"不能用于否定。要是你想表达否定语句的话,你可以说"没有很多"。

(WRONG) 我不有的是零钱。

(CORRECT) 我没有很多零钱。(wǒ méi yǒu hěn duō líng qián)
