Express “again” with “又” and “再” in Chinese

again in chinese, chinese words, learning chinese

Again in the past with "又 (yòu)"

Whenever you want to express something like "you did it again!" in Chinese, you may want to use 又.

当你想用中文表达类似"你又做了某事"的时候,可以使用"又"这个字。

There are two words for "again" in Chinese. This depends on whether the repetition has happened, or whether it's going to happen.

中文里有两个可以表示"again"的字,而用哪个字则取决于重复的事情是已经发生或还未发生。

If the repetition has happened, 又 is used.

要是重复的事情已经发生,就可以用"又"。

Subject + 又 + Verb + 了

主语+又+动词+了

Notice that 了 is used as the action is complete.

注意,"了"在这里用于表示动作已经完成。

Examples

例子

Wǒmen yòu xué le yībiàn.

We studied it one more time.

你 又 迟到 了。

Nǐ yòu chídào le.

他 又 喝 醉 了, 他 的 胃 怎么 受 得 了?

Tā yòu hē zuì le, tā de wèi zěnme shòudeliǎo?

Píngguǒ shíwǔ kuài qián yī jīn? Nǐ yòu bèi piàn le!

Fifteen kuai per jin for apples? You've been cheated again.

Similarly, we can express the same thing using another structure. Here we repeat the verb used and place 又 in the middle.

同样地,我们也可以使用另一个结构来表达同样的意思。这里,我们重复使用提到的动作,然后把"又"放在动作词中间。

Subject + Verb + 了 + 又 + Verb

Examples

例子

宝宝 出生 了, 妈妈 看 了 又 看, 高兴 得 不得了。

Bǎobǎo chūshēng le, māmā kàn le yòu kàn, gāoxìng dé bùdéliǎo.

The baby was born, and the mother just kept looking and looking at it. She was very happy.

Again in the future with "再 (zài)"

While 又 is used for "again" in the past, 再 is used for "again" in the future. That is, 再 is used when something has happened once and it will happen again.

"又"是用于表示过去的"again",而"再"则是用于表达将来的"again"。也就是说,"再"是用于某事已经发生过且将来又会发生的情况。

再 as "again"

Subject + 再 + Verb + Object

主语+再+动词+宾语

Examples

例子

再 说 一次 吧。

Zài shuō yīcì ba.

Say it again one more time.

Nǐ guò wǔ fēnzhōng zài shì shi.

再 as "and then"

A usage that feels sort of related but deserves separate mention is the use of 再 to mean "and then." It is often preceded by 先 when giving clear sequential orders.

另一个关系不大但需要单独讲解的用法就是"再"也可以表示"然后"的意思。在事件的时间先后顺序之前,经常会跟上"先"这个字。

Examples

例子

我们 先 吃饭 再 谈。

Wǒmen xiān chīfàn zài tán.

We'll eat first, and then we'll talk.

你 先 找 工作 再 考虑 买 房子。

Nǐ xiān zhǎo gōngzuò zài kǎolǜ mǎi fángzi.

First find a job, then you can think about buying a house.

再 as "another" or "some more"

The English word "another" is often avoided altogether by using 再.

英语里的"another"经常可以用"再"完全替代。

Examples

例子

你 再 给 我 一 张 纸。

Nǐ zài gěi wǒ yī zhāng zhǐ.

Give me another piece of paper.

我们 再 找 一 个 人 吧。

Wǒmen zài zhǎo yīgè rén ba.

Give me a little more money.

她 想 再 吃 点 冰淇淋 。

Tā xiǎng zài chī diǎn bīngqílín.

She wants to eat a little more ice cream.

再 as "continuous action"

Here 再 is similar to the English "for a while longer" or "keep [going/doing]".

这里的"再"的意思类似于英语里的"for a while longer"或"keep [going/doing]"。
