WAN LAN

There are the branches of the sparrow-gourd; 

There is that lad, with the spike at his girdle.

Though he carries a spike at his girdle,

He does not know us.

How easy and conceited is his manner,

With the ends of his girdle hanging down as they do!

There are the leaves of the sparrow-gourd;

There is that lad with the archer's thimble at his girdle.

Though he carries an archer's thimble at his girdle,

He is not superior to us.

wán lán   

芄蘭  

wán lán zhī zhī 、tóng zǐ pèi xī 。

芄蘭之支⑴、童子佩觿⑵。

suī zé pèi xī 、néng  bù wǒ zhī 。

雖則佩觿、能不我知⑶。

róng xī suí xī 、chuí dài jì xī 。

容兮遂兮⑷、垂帶悸兮⑷。

wán lán zhī yè 、tóng zǐ pèi shè 。

芄蘭之葉、童子佩韘⑹。

suī zé pèi shè 、néng bú wǒ xiá 。

雖則佩韘、能不我甲⑺。

róng xī suí xī 、chuí dài jì xī 。

容兮遂兮、垂帶悸兮。

注释：

⑴芄（wán丸）兰：亦名女青，荚实倒垂如锥形。支：借作“枝”。

⑵觿（xī西）：象骨制的解结用具，形同锥，也可为装饰品。成人佩饰。

⑶能：宁，岂。知：智，一说“接”

⑷容：佩刀。遂：佩玉。一说容、遂，舒缓悠闲之貌。

⑸悸：带摆动貌。

⑹韘（shè社）：象骨制的钩弦用具，著于右手拇指，射箭时用于钩弦。

⑺甲：借作“狎”，亲昵。一说长也。

译文:

芄兰荚实长在枝，有个童子已佩觽。

虽然身上已佩觽，难道不能与我在一起？

看他一本正经相啊，垂着腰带颤晃晃啊。
