ZHONG GU

In the valleys grows the mother-wort,

But scorched is it in the drier places.

There is a woman forced to leave her husband;

Sadly she sighs!

Sadly she sighs!

She suffers from his hard lot.

In the valleys grows the mother-wort,

But scorched is it where it had become long.

There is a woman forced to leave her husband;

Long-drawn are her groanings!

Long-drawn are her groanings!

She suffers from his misfortune.

In the valleys grows the mother-wort,

But scorched is it even in the moist places.

There is a woman forced to leave her husband;

Ever flow her tears!

Ever flow her tears!

But of what avail is her lament?

zhōng gǔ yǒu tuī 

中谷有蓷  

zhōng gǔ yǒu tuī 、hàn qí gān yǐ 。

中谷有蓷（1），暵其干矣（2）。

yǒu nǚ pí  lí 、kǎi qí tàn yǐ 。

有女仳离（3），慨其叹矣。

kǎi qí tàn yǐ 、yù rén zhī jiān nán yǐ 。

慨其叹矣，遇人之艰难矣。

zhōng gǔ yǒu tuī 、hàn qí xiū yǐ 。

中谷有蓷，暵其脩矣（4）。

yǒu nǚ pí lí 、tiáo qí xiào yǐ 。

有女仳离，条其啸矣（5）。

tiáo qí xiào yǐ 、yù rén zhī bú shū yǐ 。

条其啸矣，遇人之不淑矣。

zhōng gǔ yǒu tuī 、hàn qí qì yǐ 。

中谷有蓷，暵其湿矣（6）。

yǒu nǚ pí lí 、chuò qí qì yǐ 。

有女仳离，啜其泣矣。

chuò qí qì yǐ 、jiē hé jí yǐ 。

啜其泣矣，何嗟及矣。。

注释：

（1）中谷：同谷中，山谷之中。 蓷（tuī推）：益母草。

（2）暵（hàn汉）：干枯。乾（gān干）：干枯

（3）仳（pǐ匹）离：妇女被夫家抛弃逐出，后世亦作离婚讲。

（4）脩（音修）：干燥。

（5）条：失意的样子。

（6）湿：将要晒干的样子。

译文：

山中一棵益母草，根儿叶儿都枯槁。有个女子被抛弃，一声叹息一声号。一声叹息一声号，嫁人艰难谁知道！

山谷一棵益母草，根儿叶儿都干燥。有个女子被抛弃，长长叹息声声叫。长长叹息声声叫，嫁个恶人真懊恼！

山谷一棵益母草，干黄根叶似火烤。有个女子被抛弃，一阵抽泣双泪掉。一阵抽泣双泪掉，追悔莫及向谁告！
